New DVD Technology
NUON is a new kind of technology that will be making it’s way to a DVD player near you. Basically, it makes players faster, better and more powerful. NUON is a media processor that will allow enhanced equipment to play video games, browse the web and perform all sorts of advanced functions. The NUON chip is said to be faster than a 500MHz Pentium-III, bringing a whole new level of interactivity to DVD movies. It supports DVD-Video, VCD, CD-DA, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2, Dolby Digital, DTS, ProLogic, LPCM, Spatializer, MPEG audio, HDCD, CD-Text, DVD Audio and MP3 technologies... to name a few. It’s 2D/3D video subsystem will support 16 million colors with 256 levels of transparency. Instead of popping that Special Edition disc out of your home theater and over to your PC to view extended content, wouldn’t it be nice to do all of that right from your real DVD player? Much like Dolby Digital, NUON is being licensed to equipment and software manufacturers. NUON-enhanced discs will also have a plug-in to allow standard PCs to view content. The first player available will be the Samsung DVD-N2000, which will ship this spring with an MSRP of $499.
