I will be buying a digtal converter in the next few days for my 90 year old aunt and I will need a VERY simple remote (pwr/vol/ch is really all she needs :-)). Any suggestions? She is in a fringe area and will need one that can pull in weak stations.

I already have a DishTV PalPlus converter that I had hoped to give her but there is no way she will ever use that remote. But I wonder if there is a universal remote that will control that box?

...or is there another brand converter box which CAN be controlled by a simple UR to replace the remote that comes with the box?

I do have the govt coupon so it would be nice to buy one that I can use that with.

Any help will be appreciated. Is this the right forum for this?
Thanks!
Doug

Any learning remote will work that, as it's IR controlled. Look at the Sony RM-VL710. It's discontinued but still readily available. Fairly simple, big buttons, and not a lot of clutter.

It will be able to control any IR device.

The DTVPal and especially the Plus are supposed to be very good for fringe reception.

The sony rm-vl710 is NO where to be found, thats a pity too, its great remote.

You could get the rm-vl600, yes its 8 device remote, but program a single device, dumb it down however you wish. Once its set to the way you like it, then you can clone that device to other 7 devices. so you'll have 8 devices all the same.

Wow...only a few months ago they were all over ebay!

VL-600 is a good remote too, can be programmed relatively foolproof for this situation, but is smaller in button size and a tad more cluttered. Although don't let the extra buttons scare you, you can program them to do nothing so that they won't screw anything up.

Chances are you'll need to learn them, as the converter boxes are very new. Shouldn't be too much of a hassle though.

Actually, I'd recommend learning anyway, so you only learn the buttons that are necessary, leaving out the ones that can screw things up.
