My latest remote is a MX-700, which I haven't used in a while.
My equipment has turned over completely, since then
Sony SXRD 70" rear projection TV Tivo3 Oppo DVD Playstation 3 (w/ optional remote) for blu-ray Wii (when son is home) No audio yet VCR? (never use it) And HDMI switch box, w/ remote
Rather than update the MX-700, I thought I would upgrade to something better. With a base station, rechargeable battery, perhaps a nicer dispaly, perhaps something easier for a visitor to use without instructions.
Cost is not an issue at this time.
I can program, but do not know Java and do not want to spend a lot of time programming the unit. (I need to spend more time on my Photography habit.) Daughter knows Java, but lives in Boston and does not come home all that often
So I once again I come to this great site and learn --there are no easy answers.
What I liked about the MX-700 was its ease of copying macro sets designed by others. That got things up to speed quickly.
So what are my options:
More advanced HTM - but the best units have this for professional installers only thing, & I don't want more than just a little programming. How much time would that require?
Hire an installer to customize a Pronto -- but custom becomes incredibly inflexible when you have to interface with an installer every time you want to make a change. I'm not sure I would be happy.
Have my comp sci major daughter program the Pronto and test it next time she gets home. Would it be feasible for her to program it where she is, test it and install next time she come home, and work with me over the phone and IM to tweak it as needed?
The tradeoff's are brutal. I'm willing to sacrifice some elegance, as I did with the MX700 to save time. I'm willing to spend a few hours to get the unit up and running. I'm willing to pay what it takes to get the best result that fits.
But the best way to go is not clear to me even after doing some hours of research on this site.
Hey Frank did you program the 700 yourself? If you did and are confortable with the programming software you might want to stick with URC, as most of the editors are similar for the most part. The biggest differences come with the color screen graphical remotes, which you don't even have to worry about as long as you dont want to do custom graphics or backgrounds. Also the newer remotes have the capability to do variable and timer macros. As far as the availability of the software goes the dealer can give you the software if they choose to, although they are not required to, so just shop around a little for a dealer that is willing to.
You could do the Pronto yourself. There is a learning curve but its not hard. I bought one a few weeks ago (TSU9400) and I was up and running with a basic configuration very quickly.
