Final thoughts.
So, is this the best available remote control for the PlayStation 3? The answer is an unequivocal “yes”, but with a strong qualification of “so far”. If someone can figure out how to get this level of control (especially powering on the PS3) using standard consumer infrared technology, which could in turn be integrated into any universal remote control, I would purchase that in a heartbeat. I suspect that without direct involvement from Sony such a product would need to be an IR to Bluetooth transceiver – we will have to wait and see whether any company steps up to the plate.
For now, PS3 owners with large Blu-ray Disc collections will find their experiences greatly enhanced with one of these remotes. Of course, you wouldn’t be buying this product because you like the command layout or you think it looks the best – you’d be buying it because it’s the only real choice available. And when something is the only choice, does it really matter how ergonomic it is or how well it integrates with other components?
