Remote Central's extensive content can be searched with three different engines:
1. Search all reviews, news & features:
Tips: Select to match any or all words. Use an asterisk * as a wildcard. Add or restrict terms by placing a + or - before each word, or place quotes around "all phrases".
2. Search for downloadable files:
How to use:
Search for a brand name, model number, author or keyword.
Narrow your search:
To search a specific file area section (for example Sony television files for the Pronto NG), first select a remote and then navigating to that section. From there, a search box near the top of the screen will search from that point onwards. For example, if you enter a search term on the component index page, all components will be searched. If you do the same thing while viewing Sony component files, only Sony files will be searched.
3. Search all message forums:
Require or prohibit terms:
You can require a specific word by adding a + sign in front of it, or prohibit a word by adding a - sign. All other words will be treated as "optional". Try to avoid using common words such as "then" or "while", unless part of a phrase.
For example, to search for messages that must have the word "timer", must not contain "pronto" and may contain "clock", use: +timer -pronto clock.
Put phrases in quotes:
Searching for "philips pronto" will only match that specific phrase, with words in that order. You can require or prohibit a phrase by placing a + or - in front of it, for example +"onkyo chad".
Search by thread or message:
Searching a forum by "thread subject only" is the absolute fastest method, but you'll only be able to find terms located in thread titles. Searching by "entire thread" is the next fastest method, but you may obtain more accurate (or at least easier to locate) results by searching through individual messages. It is not recommended that you select more than 6 months of posts to search through when using this last method, due to speed.
Find messages by an author:
When searching by individual message, you can optionally limit results to posts written by a particular author. You may enter in the author's name, part name or six-character forum ID number.
If you would like to return all messages by an author, do not enter any search terms.
Automatic wildcards:
Words (but not phrases) have automatic wildcards added to the beginning and end. This means that earn will also match learning.
Manual wildcards:
If you would like to disable automatic wildcards on a single word, place it in quotes, for example "touch" will not match theatertouch.
You may also add a manual wildcard anywhere in terms or phrases with a *, for example rm-av3*t will match both rm-av3000t and rm-av3100t.
With a phrase, "marantz rc5000" will not match marantz rc5000i. To search for both terms, add a manual wildcard, as in "marantz rc5000*".
Case insensitive:
It makes no difference whether you enter infrared or InFraReD as a search term.
Search for non-alphanumeric characters:
You can match items such as or B&O, but try to avoid symbols unless absolutely necessary.
Faster searches:
Keep the number of individual search terms to a minimum to speed up searching. Remember that it can also take quite a bit longer to search all forums at once, or all messages "since the dawn of time" due to the sheer volume of data.
Results:
A maximum of 7,500 results will be shown 50 per page, in order of best match. You can also re-sort results by date, subject or author. Your keywords will be highlighted in matching threads.
