Review 4 made on Monday September 17, 2007 at 5:25 PM. Also owned: Various Sony, Logitech, UR, etc. Strengths: Well built. Rechargeable. Looks great. Wi-Fi. Built in control for Escient (for me a major selling point). Built in control for Lutron lighting (Another selling point for me). Completely customizable with personalized graphics, sounds, etc. Useful accessories available such as RS232 and IR repeaters that are made to work out of the box with it. Lots of good hard buttons as well as screen commands. TV channel display buttons are awesomely cool! Fairly comprehensive equipment database. Weaknesses: Software needs work. Programming for adequate functionality is a matter of days, not minutes, and fully customizing it may take weeks! Learning IR commands is a nightmare, and very cumbersome if your PC is not close to the rest of your components to test set up. No bluetooth (would have been cool!). Can't program macros/functions directly from remote- it must be connected to PC. Philips support is unfortunately just like every other giant conglomerate- large and uncaring, with poor and inadequate responses on their website. Review: While I am continually amazed at how much this device can do, I am tempered in my amazement by the effort it take to make it do what it does. I was fairly sucessful in adding some components and getting them to respond correctly, but while I can control the volume of my audio with the hard buttons regardless of the source I am watching, I still can't change sources! Learning commands for components that are not already in the database is a lot like trying to pick prickley pears off a cactus- you can get stuck a lot of times before you get the reward. What had sold me on the Pronto was the ability to control an Escient Fireball music server without having to use a video monitor. It does this quite well, but I could have bought an Escient Touchscreen for about a quarter of the price, and my Wi-fi PocketPC phone could control it as well for free. I wanted to have everything on one remote, and so far I haven't been able to set up the Pronto to do that. I also want it to be wife/kid freindly, which is what it was designed to be. I know it is possible to achieve this, but I am not there yet, and I have been trying for weeks. I'm getting closer, but this remote is certainly not for the novice, and probably not even for a lot of IT professionals. Good build quality. Lots of features. Poor value. Quality: Features: Value:

The hard buttons on the right are also great and more inline with original remote controls that come with devices such as DVD players. Looks, it is very sexy in hand and on it's stand, gets lots of complements. Weaknesses: It can drop the wireless signal sometimes and can take a second to reconnection, I have only seen this occasionally. Would be good to have PhotoShop style guides in the software to help with positioning layouts. Being able to turn off the white light in the stand would be good. Review: The large screen size is a major bonus on this remote along with the hard buttons, and my reason for buying it. This allows you to create a good user experience for all levels of users. The flexibility of the design software is great, although to get the most you do need to have an eye for "interface design". That said the standard templates it comes with are good, although I found they put a little too much on the pages and removing some of the content made it easier to use. Functionally it works well, I have increased the screen timeout to 30 secs, as the standard 20 was to quick for the family when forwarding through the commercials on recorded TV. Although you do need two hands to operate the remote, the curved back design allows it to set on the arm of a chair or sofa nicely for one-handed use. I am not sure why people have an issue with not being able to download from the remote to the PC, as if you have the master file you do not need to do that ... Maybe I am missing something? This is a great remote and comes highly recommended. My objective was to find a remote which was designed so family and friends could use it without any instructions from me and I have achieved that by being able to "design my own" with this remote. Harmony 880, 1000 Strengths: Limited 2-way RS232, Display, can use wireless network rather than just RF. Software improvments from the Pro Edit. Weaknesses: 2-hand operation, cant use old graphics without rescaling, Some features in the software need to be changed such as not being able to upload the remote. Review: Ive been messing with this remote for the last few months. And the biggest thing I have a problem with is its not a one hand remote. But you cant have your cake and eat it to. Because I do like the other features like the pre-programed 2-way RS232 it has for certain products. This means if you have all products in their list of products that you can just add that product and the codes are pre-done for you. Yes it is true that at the moment they only have 2 products for the 2-Way RS232. But what wasnt mentioned is the fact that they have most major brands both Pro and consumer knocking on the door to be added to the list. Give them a little time to be added. Now keep in mind that this is a pro install product and is not recomended for someone that has a drag and drop mindset. I sat in on one of the training classes for this remote and it was alot like a question and answer for pro installers. We gave them our input on certain things that will change with new Software upgrades. So this remote is backed by pro installers ideas and input. Big props to Philips for having the insight to care about our opinions. Overall this remote has some major potential and I cant wait till the RFX9600 comes out so I can play with that. Also owned: NevoSL; Logitech Harmony 880; iPronto Strengths: Display, craddle look Weaknesses: No UPnP support, disastrous software for system settings. Support pages of Philips regarding this product are poor. Looks like the product has been released before thought through. NO WPA support !! Music Server support for escient....not even Philips Streamium which is UPnP compatible. Review: Programming is done with a new pronto edit professional software. If you have worked once with Nevo Studio you can only be disappointed. Tip : Don't buy this device without waiting for further upgrades...if they will be once available. Quality: Features: Value:
